At Parkfield, we love providing children with opportunities to explore, create, and learn
through hands-on experiences. One of the most valuable ways children learn is through
messy play.
Whether it’s painting, water play, mud kitchens, sensory trays, baking, or exploring natural
materials outdoors, messy play encourages children to investigate the world around them
using all their senses. These experiences help develop creativity, problem-solving skills,
language, confidence, fine motor skills, and social interaction.
Learning Can Be Messy!
As children become deeply engaged in their play, they often focus entirely on the experience
rather than keeping themselves clean. Paint may end up on sleeves, mud might find its way
onto trousers, and water can splash onto shoes. While we always provide aprons and
encourage children to take care, getting a little messy is often a sign that a child is fully
immersed in their learning.
Research and experience show that children learn best when they are free to explore
without worrying about making a mess. We want our children to feel confident
experimenting, taking risks, and expressing themselves creatively.
How Parents Can Help
To ensure your child can enjoy all nursery activities comfortably, we kindly ask parents to:
- Dress children in practical, comfortable clothes suitable for active play.
- Avoid sending children in special or expensive outfits.
- Provide spare clothes, including socks and underwear, in your child’s nursery bag.
- Ensure outdoor clothing and wellies are available when required.
Although we take great care and encourage children to wear protective clothing, some stains
and marks are unavoidable during a busy day of learning and exploration.
Celebrating the Mess
At nursery, we see messy play as much more than getting dirty—it’s an important part of
childhood learning and development. The paint splatters, muddy footprints, and flour-covered
hands often tell the story of a day filled with discovery, imagination, and fun.
