How to Help Your Child Express Their Feelings You can help your child express their feelings by
providing them with a safe, comfortable environment, explaining the different
emotions and responding to behavioural outbursts with empathy.
In this month’s blog at Parkfield
Nursery we look at how to help your child express their feelings.

Explain the Different Feelings Emotional intelligence is something that has to be
learnt by children as they are not born with it. This makes navigating complex
thoughts and reactions to situations challenging for them.
A great way to begin the conversation is to be open
with your own emotions. When you explain how you are feeling, whether happy,
sad or stressed, your child will learn how you are feeling and why and be able
to apply that to their own thoughts.
Respond With Empathy In response to your child struggling with strong
emotions and misbehaving, it is crucial that you respond with empathy. All
these feelings are complicated for youngsters, so telling them off in a
negative tone will only make it more confusing for them.
If your child misbehaves because they are sad, angry or
hurt, adults should use a warm, caring tone and lower themselves to their
level. This can prevent the situation from escalating and make the youngster
feel safe and comfortable, creating an ideal atmosphere for open communication.
The Benefits of Expressing Feelings Suppressing emotions can lead to a wide range of
issues, such as reduced self-confidence and problems forming strong
relationships with others. Some benefits of helping your child learn how to
express their feelings confidently include:
Empathy Positive
Relationships Good Mental
Health Less Behavioural
Problems Increased
Confidence Better
Performance in School Be approachable and show your child how to ask for help
when they need it. Showing them that someone is available to listen to and
support them will give them the confidence to express themselves confidently.
